"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him." HOME CALL
Br. Samuel Babu, Believers Brethren Assembly, (BBA), Majlis - Bahrain For the last few days, we have been relentlessly praying for Br. Samuel Babu, who suffered Cardiac Problems and was admitted in Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. It was well pleasing for our Lord to call HIS child to the Eternal Home, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no tears, no sickness and no death. He went to be with the LORD around 10:30 PM Bahrain Time today (Friday 23rd 2015). Let us uphold the grieving family members to the Throne of Grace. May the Lord bestow upon them heavenly Grace, Peace and strength and console them with the word of God.

God’s Direction and Human Response

Dr. Saneesh Cherian, Kannur

The beginning of the human race commences with the incident that talks about God’s direction to man and his escapism. Adam, who was created in the image and likeness of God was instructed to eat all the fruits except fruits from two trees in the middle of the Garden. The instruction of the Lord was plain and clear, but the eyes of man were controlled by the desire to taste the forbidden fruit. However, contrary to their expectation, the result was something horrible. The sweet relationship with the Creator was broken. They were terminated from the Garden.  The story continues with the narration of the deeds of the first brothers Cain and Abel. After killing Abel, Cain tried to escape from the presence of his parents as well as from the Lord God Almighty, which was a totally vain attempt. This kind of escapism of man from the presence of the Lord continued throughout the centuries and it exists even today.

I would like to draw your attention to two great men of God, who were convicted by the Lord for their escapism from the standards and commands of the Lord.

The first one is Solomon the great king of Israel; the last king who ruled the united nation of Israel. It is stated that there was no king like him, before or after. However, the vast amount of wisdom and his uncountable treasures caused him to escape from the boundaries of moral and ethical life in his good times. We see that the beginning of his reign commenced under the guidance of the Lord. He was fully submissive to Him and humble enough to honour the prophets. But the desire of his eyes caused him to take wives from many neighboring countries, which finally lead to a great trap. He was forced to build up altars for the gods and goddesses of other nations other than the God of Israel - Jehovah. To please his wives he had to bow down before those idols. His attitude was that God has given me wealth, health and popularity and I have used it. His eyes were blinded by the desires in his heart towards the beauty of women and the wealth of the nations. He was able to fulfill his desires without much hardship. But at the end of his life, the Lord God caused him to take a look at his past life. He came to the conclusion that everything is folly under the Heaven. At the end he came to the realization that the Fear of the Lord is truly better and more excellent than the pleasures of the world.

Now he is so old. He is unable to move by himself; a stage of helplessness. The roaring lion becomes so silent and is unable to open the mouth. Solomon the great King of Israel turns out to be a great defeat before the Lord. God was bringing history before his eyes – he had to revise everything. Solomon was so upset to see the downs and failures in his life. It was in the area of morality he failed; spiritually and physically. His physical immorality led him to be spiritually immoral. He felt everything was folly at the end. But the Lord showed him what exactly the meaning of life is. Solomon himself wrote it by the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost in the Book of Ecclesiates: “ Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, ‘ I have no delight in them”.(12:1). This is something wonderful. Remember your Creator in your youth. This is the only thing which can make your life worthwhile. Before this inspired scripture, he was minus. He began with that standard when he was young, but he failed as he grew up. The words of the Lord turned out to be a great agony for him. He was blessed by the obedience of his father David but due to his disobedience, Solomon’s son was out of the plan of God. That was shocking news to him. The division of the united Kingdom of Israel happened in front of his eyes. He felt very bad. So he advised with the conclusion of life as “Fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil” (Eccl 12:13,14). The voice of Solomon – Remember God in your youth and Fear God still echoes in the world, but many have ignored this advice.  Even today God speaks to us with these two words – Remember your Creator and Fear Him when you are young. Then only the end will be peaceful like David, hearing the blessed message of the Lord concerning the generation.

The second example is Jonah, who was called and sent by the Lord to a country full of wickedness. The mission was to warn them against the coming judgment on them. Even though he was a child of God, he was a self-justifying man who really neglected the greatness of his call. He had the conviction of his call, awareness about the people to whom he was sent and he knew the desire of God who had sent him. Instead of going to Nineveh, Jonah took his ticket to Tarshish. He had confidence in his heart that he was a servant of the Lord. He thought that even if he went away from the plan of God, that God would care for him since God is gracious. His understanding was correct in one aspect. Due to his disobedience God punished him and at the same time provided an option of safety through a fish. The fish was appointed by the Lord to teach him the lesson that his attitude of trying to escape from God was not acceptable before the Lord. Somehow, Jonah reached Nineveh, preached the gospel, but contrary to his expectation they repented on their sins. So Jonah was upset. He gave importance to his calculation rather than the plan of God towards those people and even to him.

Today we are also in the same situation of struggle between our own conclusions about our call and the plan of God. Many a time, we forget God as he blesses us materially just as He blessed Solomon. We live as though we are not accountable to anyone. But the Lord, in the end times, will bring every action and thought into our memories which will cause a great agony about the failures from our side and rewards from the side of God.

At times we are just like Jonah, willing to preach but unwilling that people repent of their sins.

The life of these two people teaches us that we are not supposed to escape from the standards of God. We also learn that it is not possible to escape even if we try. Let us hold fast the truth that the Spirit of God has given to us that – ‘Remember your Creator in your youth and Fear Him” for he shall ask the account from us. The material blessings which he has given us should not cause us to be spiritually and physically immoral like Solomon. The calling He has given us is not to escape based on our own desires and thinking, but to follow His will and desire at all times.
