"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him." Br. Samuel Babu, Believers Brethren Assembly, (BBA), Majlis - Bahrain For the last few days, we have been relentlessly praying for Br. Samuel Babu, who suffered Cardiac Problems and was admitted in Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. It was well pleasing for our Lord to call HIS child to the Eternal Home, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no tears, no sickness and no death. He went to be with the LORD around 10:30 PM Bahrain Time today (Friday 23rd 2015). Let us uphold the grieving family members to the Throne of Grace. May the Lord bestow upon them heavenly Grace, Peace and strength and console them with the word of God.

Bro. Vinayadas Abraham, Bahrain

Few years back a colleague of my wife who spoke to her for about half an hour created a lot of confusion in her mind. An analysis of the talk that she had with my wife revealed that she was a Jehovah’s Witness and I was amazed at their ability to influence others.

The above incidence gave me an interest to thoroughly study about Jehovah’s Witness who claim that they are the “mouthpiece of Jehovah.” The questions that JWs raise leave an average believer startled and the confusion they are capable of creating is very profound. Satan, who tempted our Lord Jesus Christ after His 40 days fasting, was in fact quoting the Scripture (Mat.4:1-11). The best method to cut down satanic tactics is to take up the two-edged sword i.e. the Word of God as was done by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jehovah’s Witnesses make haughty claims that they are witnesses of the only true God and all others are heretics. They reject almost all the doctrines of Christianity – They reject the deity of Jesus Christ, the personality of the Holy Spirit and salvation as taught in the Bible. They have been setting dates for the return of the Lord although He dismissed the notion that any man on earth could predict the exact date and time of His return. They reject the literal hell as taught throughout the Scripture. They bring in a new doctrine on heaven untaught in the Scripture. Since the original Word of God knocks down all these erroneous teachings, they dared to change His Word to suit their teachings, without heeding His warning. Despite these facts they claim that they are the true Witnesses!

I have heard many believers saying that Jehovah’s Witnesses are very dangerous and we should avoid them. But the Scripture teaches something else – “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you” (I Peter 3:15). It is the responsibility of all the believers to rise up to defend the Christian faith and therefore I have realised the significance of analysing the falsehood of Jehovah’s Witnesses who are a real threat to Christianity.

One of the requirements for salvation as taught by the Watch Tower Society is that its members should be actively involved in door-to-door proselytizing and selling of its books and tracts. Taking this self-invented “canvassing tactics” of the Society as a Divine requirement, the ignorant JWs are actively in the field propagating their religion and they target believers and non-believers alike. Therefore, there is a great need for believers to be aware of JW’s falsehood and hence the Research.

Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that they are the true believers and reject all others as non-believers or heretics. The purpose of this Research is to bring out the truth as taught in the Word of God, and establish the falsehood of this cult.

Jehovah’s Witnesses was officially founded in 1884 as the Zion’s Watchtower and Tract Society by Charles Taze Russell. C.T. Russell was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania on 16th February 1852. As an adult he became involved in Seventh Day Adventism and acquired an interest in end time prophecies.

After the failure of their prediction that Lord Jesus Christ would return in the year 1844, by the early 1870s, a number of Adventists had begun speculating on a date again, this time it was 1874. Although most ignored that notion when the date came and went with no noticeable event, one small group came up with a new idea that He had, indeed, "Come again," but it was an invisible second "presence." One of the primary publications promoting this unique idea was “The Herald of the Morning”, published by Adventist Nelson Barbour. In 1876, C.T. Russell joined with Barbour and became the Assistant Editor of the publication. Barbour and Russell declared that Christ's invisible presence of 1874 was to be followed by the literal rapture of the Saints to heaven in 1878. When this date passed proving the falsehood of their prophecy, Barbour and Russell had a split, and Russell left to start his own rival magazine, taking Barbour's mailing list from which to gather subscribers. Thus in 1879 Russell first published Zion's Watchtower and Herald of Christ's Presence, the forerunner of today's Watchtower magazine. And there were shortly a number of Bible study groups forming around the teachings in this new magazine, with members considering Russell as their "Pastor."

The history of the Jehovah’s Witnesses can be divided into six periods with the six Presidents who have led the movement since its inception:

1). Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916)

It would be worthwhile to take a look at the life of the founder of Jehovah’s Witnesses – Russell married Maria Ackley in 1879. The Society progressed under the joint administration of the husband and the wife, but in 1897 Mrs. Russell left her husband and six years later she sued for separation. There was much litigation regarding the support payment that Mr. Russell had to pay for his ex-wife, and it was settled in 1909 by payment of US$ 6,036.00 to her. During the course of the trial, it came to light that Russell’s religious activities were carried on through several subsidiary societies and that all the wealth which flowed to him through these societies was under the control of a holding company in which the so-called “Pastor” held US$ 990.00 of the US$ 1,000.00 capital and two of his followers the balance US$ 10.00.

Besides, the Brooklyn Daily “Eagle” published on 1st November 1916 the following scandalous report on the sale of “Miracle Wheat” by C.T. Russell:

“… “Pastor” Russell’s Watch Tower publication advertised wheat seed for sale at US$ 1.00 a pound. It was asserted that it would grow five times as much as any other brand of wheat. There were other claims made for the wheat seed, and the followers were advised to purchase it, the proceeds to go to the Watch Tower and be used in publishing the “Pastor’s” sermons.”

The Eagle first made public the facts about this new venture of Russell and it published a cartoon picturing the “Pastor” and his “Miracle Wheat” in such a way that “Pastor” Russell brought suit for defamation, seeking US$ 100,000.00 damages! The Government Departments investigated the wheat for which US$ 1.00 a pound was charged and the Government officials were important witnesses at the trial of the defamation suit in January 1913. To the utter shame of the Watch Tower Society, it was proved that the “Miracle Wheat” was low quality and thus The Eagle won the suit. The Eagle was so sure of the fraud that prior to entering the court, it said,

“The Eagle goes even further and declares that at the trial it will show that “Pastor” Russell’s religious cult is nothing more than a money-making scheme”

There are various other scandalous reports about the “Pastor”, but for the sake of brevity all of them are not considered here, however a detailed account of these reports can be found in the Book “The Kingdom of the Cults” by Walter Martin.

2). Joseph F. Rutherford (1869-1942)

After the death of C.T. Russell, J.F. Rutherford who was Russell’s attorney in the defamatory libel became the second President of this cult. In addition to his speaking and editorial work and the publication of dozens of booklets, he wrote an average of one new book each year. Rutherford became the "new oracle of God's message for this age" and his predecessor’s writings and interpretations were often neglected or rejected.

3). Nathan K. Knorr (1905-1977)

Following Rutherford's death in 1942, Nathan H. Knorr officially took over the leadership of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the membership of which was about 115,000 then. Knorr demonstrated his organizational ability in the great growth that took place under his direction in the areas of membership, outreach, buildings and publications, and when he died in 1977 the membership rose to 2,250,000.

4). Frederick W. Franz (1893-1992)

When Knorr died, Fred Franz was elected the Watchtower's fourth president. He continued to rule with an iron hand. Franz died on Dec. 22, 1992 at the age of 99.

5). Milton G. Henschel (1920-2003)

Milton G. Henschel moved from Vice President to replace Franz. The Watch Tower Society’s statistics are – The attendance at their annual Memorial of Christ’s death – 15,597,746; total volunteer hours spent in public Bible educational work 1.2 billion; total practicing members – 6,304,645, total congregation 94,600.

6). Don Alden Adams (1925-living)

After Milton G. Henschel stepped down from the presidency as a result of major organizational changes, Don Alden Adams became the 6th President of the Watch Tower Society.  He had served as secretary to the 3rd President of the WTS, Nathan H. Knorr.

With Don Alden Adams on the President’s seat, whether the membership would further increase or decrease – only the time will tell!
