"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him." (Gen.22:2-3)

Br. Samuel Babu, Believers Brethren Assembly, (BBA), Majlis - Bahrain For the last few days, we have been relentlessly praying for Br. Samuel Babu, who suffered Cardiac Problems and was admitted in Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. It was well pleasing for our Lord to call HIS child to the Eternal Home, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no tears, no sickness and no death. He went to be with the LORD around 10:30 PM Bahrain Time today (Friday 23rd 2015). Let us uphold the grieving family members to the Throne of Grace. May the Lord bestow upon them heavenly Grace, Peace and strength and console them with the word of God.

Mrs. Annamma John, Saudi Arabia

God chose Moses to deliver the Israelites from the bondage of Egypt. God sent ten plagues to the Egyptians, but only during the tenth plague – the death of the first-born – Pharaoh allowed them to leave Egypt. The Egyptians urged the Israelites to go out of the land in haste. The Israelites obtained redemption by the blood of the Passover lamb. God gave the commandments about the Passover to Moses and Moses gave instructions to the people. Moses instructed them, "Remember this day you went out from Egypt, from the house of slavery for by a powerful hand the Lord brought you out from this place……………………you shall observe this rite in this month…….and you shall tell your son on that day, saying, 'it is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.'………………..every first-born of man among your sons you shall redeem. And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, "What is this?" then you shall say to him, "With a powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery….." (Exodus: 13: 3 – 14).

God miraculously made a way of deliverance through the Red Sea. Forty years in the desert, God guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and with a pillar of fire by night, fed them with manna and quail. God gave them water from the rock. Their clothing did not wear out, nor did their foot swell.

After forty years of their sojourn journey in the desert, they were about to reach Canaan – their promised land. To reach there, they had to cross the river Jordan. At the beginning of their journey forty years back, God showed His power to their fathers by dividing the Red Sea and the sons of Israel went through the midst of the sea on the dry land and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on the left. This new generation did not see that miracle by Almighty God. So the Lord showed His power again. When those who carried the ark into the Jordan, and the feet of the priests carrying the ark were dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows its banks all the days of harvest) that the waters which were flowing down from above stood and rose up in one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho. Joshua appointed twelve men (one man from each tribe), and asked them to take up a stone each on their shoulder out of the middle of the Jordan, and lay them down in the lodging place where they lodge that night. Those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. Also Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing.

Joshua told them, "Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later saying, 'What do these stones mean to you?'; then you shall say to them, "Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.' So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever." (Joshua: 4: 6-7). Again in verse 21- 24, we read, "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying 'What are these stones?', then you shall inform your children, saying, "Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed; that all the people of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, so that you may fear the Lord your God forever."

When we come to the book of Deuteronomy, we see Joshua giving the sons of Israel the essence of the law which Moses gave to their fathers and commanded them to obey, so that "you, your son and your grandson might fear the Lord your God."

"These commandments shall be on your heart and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk to them when you sit in your house and when you walk and when you lie down and when you rise up, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead and you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Deu: 6: 17 – 18, "You should diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and His testimonies and His statutes which He has commanded you; and you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord….."

Verse: 20-25, "When your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which the Lord our God commanded you? Then you shall say to your son, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt; and the Lord brought us from Egypt with a mighty hand. Moreover, the Lord showed great and distressing signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household, and He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which he had sworn to our fathers. So the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today. And it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all this commandments before the Lord our God, just as He commanded us."

Years passed, Moses, Joshua, Caleb…..and all the generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel. Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baal, and they forsook the Lord the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the Lord to anger. So they forsook the Lord and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

What a pitiable condition! What really did happen to the chosen people Israel? They failed to pass on the commandments, to the generation who did not see the great and distressing signs and wonders by God. What was the result? "A generation who did not know the Lord." They did not want God as their King. They wanted to have a king over them that they also may be like all the other nations, that their king may judge them and go out before them and fight their battles. So the anger of the Lord burned against them.

Today, the pathetic condition of our younger generation is not different from that. They do not have much knowledge or real awareness of the doctrine that their fathers or forefathers were following. They want to be like all others around them and like to be more conformed to this world.

What is the reason for such a condition?

Do we hold on to something special (which is different from others) in our Christian life, for our children to ask; "What is this?" Do we have some milestones in our Christian life, for our children to ask, "What are these stones?" or "What do these stones mean?" Do we have the right doctrine, testimonies and commandments, for our children to ask; "Why are we different from others?" Do we have something special like the Rechabites'? (Jeremiah: Ch 35). Are we successful in "Passing the baton" to our children, which the Israelites failed to do; or are we also conforming to this world? Is our younger generation aware of the basic Doctrine of Faith? Are we sparing some time to share with them about our faith? Are we teaching them to holdfast to that which is good and abstain from every form of evil?

Dear Sisters, one more year has passed by. Every year, on December 31st we take some good decisions; and in the next December 31st we say, " My Lord was good and faithful to me, even though I was unfaithful……." It is being repeated every year. Now we are going to step into a New Year, 2009. Let's have a self evaluation. Are we successful in keeping the Lord's commandments in our life? Do we have the real experience of Romans: Ch. 12 in our day to day life?

Are we ready to go one step forward in our Christian life? We are going to go through the paths we have not passed before. Our children are living in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation. Let us pray for them that they may prove themselves to be blameless and innocent children of God and appear as lights in the world; holding fast the Word of Life. Let us bow down in the presence of the Lord – examine ourselves – and be right with God. Is there any unconfessed sin in our life? Let us allow the Holy Spirit to take full control of our life. May God Almighty enable us to lead a victorious Christian life well pleasing to our Lord and Master.
