"And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him." Br. Samuel Babu, Believers Brethren Assembly, (BBA), Majlis - Bahrain For the last few days, we have been relentlessly praying for Br. Samuel Babu, who suffered Cardiac Problems and was admitted in Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. It was well pleasing for our Lord to call HIS child to the Eternal Home, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no tears, no sickness and no death. He went to be with the LORD around 10:30 PM Bahrain Time today (Friday 23rd 2015). Let us uphold the grieving family members to the Throne of Grace. May the Lord bestow upon them heavenly Grace, Peace and strength and console them with the word of God.

By, Mercy John, Bahrain

Lydia was originally from the city Thyatira in Asia Minor who lived in Philippe. She was a wealthy business lady who sold purple. It was believed to be a business among the rich people and the members of the Roman Empire. Let us look at some of Lydia’s qualities.

            1) She was a worshiper of God:- In the midst of her business she found time to pray with a group of women by a river side (Acts 16: 13). Not knowing the real truth she worshiped the Living God.

A vision appeared to Paul in the night while he was in Troas. There stood a man of Macedonia and prayed him saying, come over into Macedonia and help us(Acts 16:9). Therefore Paul and Silas came to Philippe which is the chief city of Macedonia. On the Sabbath day, they went out of the city by a river side where prayer was to be made. A group of women gathered there and Lydia was one among them. Paul started speaking to them about the living word. Lydia, though a worshiper of God, longed to hear God’s word. Lord opened he heart to understand what Paul spoke. She was convicted of the salvation of her Soul. Evidently until this time her heart had been closed to Christ, though she used to worship God and pray.

            2) She yielded herself to Lord’s commandment: - Lydia heard the living word of God; she opened her heart to accept Christ. She was not satisfied with that. She further obeyed the Lord in Baptism. This yielding showed real conviction and made her decision to be a true Christian without hesitation. She did not think how it might affect her business or her interaction with the high class rich people. She gave the priority to Christ more than anything or anybody in this world. When we look around the world we can see many people are convicted about their sin and might get saved. But they are hesitant to take the step of obeying the Lord in waters of Baptism. The main reason for this is that they fear the world around them more than the Great God.

            3) She influenced her family:- Lydia had a great concern about her household. We do not know whether it was her family members or her servants. It could be both. It is not clear whether she herself told the Gospel to them or she invited them to Paul and Silas to hear the Gospel. It could be even her changed behavior that would have motivated them to become Christians. Whatever it is we see that the household believed in Christ and got Baptized.

            4) She opened her home for God’ people: - She says, if you have judged me as faithful in the Lord, come into my house and abide there (Acts 16:15). We can note here that the invitation was not just simple it was with a condition, “if you consider me as faithful”. She wants to prove that she is faithful. Further we see that Paul stayed there and a church was formed in her home. The church grew up to be known as a Church of Philippe to whom Paul has written a letter and later became a book in the Bible. Lydia’s house was a station for Paul and his fellow workers to reach the Gospel in the great city of Macedonia. Her hospitality was a great support for Paul’s ministry. Great miracles happened during their ministry. A girl was healed who was possessed with a spirit of divination (Acts 16: 16). Lydia and her group prayed earnestly when Paul and Silas where jailed. God answered their prayer and freed them from the prison and also converted the Prisoner and the family. When Paul and Silas went out of the Prison they went straight to Lydia’s house and seen the brethren in her house.

As a result of Lydia’s good qualities we can see that she became the first convert in the Europe. Her house become a center for the Christian fellowship and become the first church in Europe- the Church of Philippe.

Dear sisters, Let us examine ourselves for a moment. Is it our wealth, business, position or worldly relationship that hinders us from serving the Lord? Hospitality is emphasized as a duty of Christians in New Testament Romans 12:12, 1 Peter 4:9. Hebrews 13: 1-2. Shall we open our homes more for God’s people and be blessed. May God bless as to follow the path of Lydia.
